At the foot of the statue of Amalia lies the Amalia rose garden. The result of close collaboration between LUGA asbl, the City of Luxembourg Parks Department, and the associations Lëtzebuerger Rousefrëmm and Patrimoine Roses Luxembourg, this rose garden features a wide variety of roses named after outstanding women fro Luxembourg.
The “Amalia Rose” was introduced at the inauguration of the rose garden in 2023.
Amalia Maria da Gloria Augusta of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (1830–1872), daughter of Duke Charles Bernard of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach and Ida of Saxe-Meiningen, met Prince Henry of the Netherlands in Madeira. Prince Henry had been appointed Lieutenant-Representative for Luxembourg by his brother King William III, King of the Netherlands and Grand Duke of Luxembourg. They married in 1853 and lived at Walferdange Castle. The couple was very popular, Princess Amélie being known for her great charity. Princess Amélie died of pneumonia at the age of 42. Her memorial is located in the municipal park of the city of Luxembourg. The inscription on the pedestal, ‘Princess Henri des Pays-Bas’, is characteristic of the social position of women at that time. As the wife of the regent, Princess Amalia was mainly involved in charitable works. She is revered as the mother of the nation.
