Cut through by the French-Luxembourg border and the River Gander, the 45-hectare thermal park in Mondorf-les-Bains enjoys a mild microclimate. In 1886, Parisian landscape architect Edouard André created the park for the thermal spa resort to meet the needs of spa guests.
The Grand Duchy's largest rose garden is located at the end of the park, sloping down the southern side of a hill. An initial rose garden, created around 1958 at the initiative of the Luxembourg Horticultural Federation, was redesigned between 2013 and 2015. Some 3,000 rose bushes, including English “Austin”, French, German and Luxembourg varieties, are arranged in separate flowerbeds. Arches decorated with climbing roses create beautiful rose tunnels. In a shaded area near Frantz Kinnen's “La Tulipe” fountain, botanical roses display their simple, fragrant flowers at the beginning of the summer season.
At the inauguration of the rose garden on 16 June 2016, the “Edouard-André Paysagiste” rose was baptised in the presence of Florence André, granddaughter of the landscape architect. It is planted at the foot of the sculpture “La fille aux roses” (The Girl with Roses) by Jean Mich (1871–1932). Famous personalities such as Victor Hugo, Maurice Ravel, Arthur Rubinstein and Jean Monnet stayed in Mondorf-les-Bains, nicknamed the “Luxembourg Riviera”.
