The “Amalia Rose” rose bush is a charming shrub with a supple shape and beautiful thick olive green foliage. Each branch ends in a cluster of small rounded flower buds, which continuously bloom into delicate double corollas in changing shades of pink.
Princess Amélie of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (1830-1872), first wife of Prince Henri of Orange-Nassau of the Netherlands, was very popular in Luxembourg for her charity work. Prince Henri of the Netherlands, appointed lieutenant-representative of Luxembourg by his elder brother, King Grand Duke William III, lived with his wife at Walferdange Castle. At the age of 42, Princess Amélie died there of pneumonia. In 1876, a memorial, the first in the City of Luxembourg, was unveiled in the city's municipal park in her honour.
The rose “Amalia Rose” was launched on 26 May 2023 near the Amalia Monument in Luxembourg City Park, during the inauguration of the rose garden in front of the Amalia Monument, which is planted with roses dedicated to remarkable women from Luxembourg.
